Summer Of Weird
It was different then.....
The pubs closed at 3pm and didn't re-open until 5pm, then closed again at 11pm! We didn't have mobile phones, if you wanted to speak to someone you had to know their home or office numbers, you couldn't just text them....
The internet didn't exist, if you wanted to get your music heard you had to send tapes to promoters of venues (by post) or to A&R departments of the record labels, you couldn't just e-mail a copy of an MP3.CD's were in their infancy, everything was recorded and distributed on ferrous tape, no desktop publishing meant that tape covers were either home made photocopy jobs (some of us could sneak onto the works photocopier and get some coloured ones done)or a very small run done via the local prontaprint - artwork was put together by hand!
Rehearsals would invariably follow a night on the town, be conducted in dingy rooms, everyone suffering with stonking headaches....
But we had to drink didn't we? Handing out flyers was thirsty work, and some of us needed the Dutch courage to press leaflets adverstising our latest gig into the palms of the confused strangers at all gigs of our contemporaries, to cajole all our mates and fellow musicians to come along one more time, and generally butter up anyone who we thought might bolster the attendence......
So, fill in the gaps, record for posterity the trials and tribulations, whether legend or fact, remember a time that was fun, and remember what Ray Jordan once said:
"All my friends are stars"
